Aleem, M. I. H. (Research Institute for Advanced Studies, Baltimore, Md.). Generation of reducing power in chemosynthesis. III. Energy-linked reduction of pyridine nucleotides in Thiobacillus novellus. J. Bacteriol. 91:729-736. 1966.-Cell-free extracts from Thiobacillus novellus. catalyzed an adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-dependent reduction of pyridine nucleotides anaerobically, or aerobically when the respiratory chain was inhibited by azide. The exogenous electron donor employed for the reduction of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP) was thiosulfate, formate, or mammalian ferrocytochrome c. In the latter case, the oxidation of ferrocytochrome c was observed with the concomitant reduction of the pyridine nucleotide. Values calculated for the molar ratios of ATP utilized-NADP reduced and of cytochrome c oxidized-NADP reduced were 1:1 and 2:1, respectively. The energy-dependent reduction of the pyridine nucleotides was inhibited by Atabrine or amytal and by low concentrations of the uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation such as 2,4-dinitrophenol and carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenyl hydrazone. Evidence is presented showing that the reduced pyridine nucleotides are essential for providing the reducing power for the energy-dependent reduction of carbon dioxide in T. novellus.

Oxalate, formate, formamide, and methanol metabolism in Thiobacillus novellus.
Thiobacillus novellus was able to grow with oxalate, formate, formamide, and methanol as sole sources of carbon and energy. Extensive growth on methanol required yeast extract or vitamins. Glyoxylate carboligase was detected in extracts of oxalate-grown cells. Ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase was found in extracts of cells grown on formate, formamide, and thiosulfate. These data indicate that ...
متن کاملThe Interaction of Energy and Electron Transfer Reactions in Mitochondria +G
Two types of reaction have been described in which a reversal of electron transfer may occur: (a) energy-linked reduction of pyridine nucleotide in the presence of a flavin-linked substrate (I) and (b) energy-linked oxidation of cytochrome and reduction of pyridine nucleotide (2). In the latter, the presence of both oxidized and reduced forms of the respiratory carriers suggests that the system...
متن کاملElectron transport-linked compared with proton-induced ATP generation in Thiobacillus novellus.
The apparently soluble electron-transport system, that does not sediment when centrifuged at 144,000 x g or 300,000 x g for 3 hr, catalyzes oxidative phosphorylation with an efficiency comparable to that of an intact mitochondrial system. While the proton-induced phosphorylation occurs in whole cells, crude cell-free extracts, and supernatants from low-speed centrifugation, it does not occur in...

متن کاملDay-ahead energy management of a microgrid with renewable energy resources and CHP units, considering demand response
Global warming, environmental pollution, fossil resources reduction, the increased demand and price of energy carriers, and various international social and political consequences are among the problems of traditional energy generation and distribution system. In the traditional generation systems, about two-thirds of energy is wasted and the presence of scattered energy resources such as photo...
